There’s something magical about spending your night in a tent with sounds of wildlife all around you – and knowing that the only thing standing between you and nature is a fabric wall. Sleeping in a tented camp on safari might not sound luxurious but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, for a really authentic safari with all the creature comforts, a tented camp is certainly worth considering.
Here are some safari camping activities to help you get the most out of your travel to Africa:
View wildlife from the comfort of your camp
Sometimes, you don’t have to travel long distances to find wildlife. Safari camps put you right at the center stage – where it all happens. A camp gives you a 360-degree view of the surrounding area, allowing you to look at the animals as they move in their natural habitat – elephants, giraffes, zebras, and so on. You also get to enjoy the beautiful view of the landscape. It is, indeed a very relaxing experience.
Keep kids entertained
If you are working with a good operator, then you won’t have to worry about your kids’ entertainment while at the camp. Most of these agents have a range of activities that you choose from to keep the kids engaged and entertained. For instance, you can collect fallen nests, interesting leaves, feathers and so on to create a collection table (though often, you won’t be able to take these things from the game park or reserve). You can also stop and look at insect and animal tracks, among other things.
Go for a picnic
Another great activity that you can do while on safari is to enjoy a picnic lunch in a shady spot as you make your way along on your game drive. In fact, a bush picnic is one way to really maximise your game drives without having to return to the camp for lunch.
Get a massage
Depending on the type of camp you are in, you may decide to have a massage to relax your body after a long and rough day on game drives. Some camps offer massage services (as part of their service or at some cost) at their own spa. If massage is essential to you, then you may want to consider that before choosing an operator.
Go to the gym
Some camps even offer gym facilities that offer picturesque views of the bush – letting you see the wildlife and the landscape as you work out.
As you can see, you don’t really have to sacrifice luxury or comfort to get closer to nature. A tented safari camp allows you to have both these things – only more intimately.
